Tolerance/intolerance

Standard

There’s a video that’s up on youtube that Jeremy Sear posted about yesterday.  It’s been published by an American group called Focus on the Family, and it is an impressive package of bigotry in the guise of victimisation.  The main thrust of the video is that children are being brainwashed into homosexuality in schools, and that this organisation is able to provide support for those parents who object to this.  If you can stomach it, the video is here:

The amount of naked homophobia and gross misinformation is truly astounding.  And the thing that sickens me the most is exactly how many people (in Australia as well as the US) would wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment behind this despicable anti-gay propaganda.  Yes, those of us with a modicum of intelligence, a semi-decent education and the ability to think somewhat critically can see it for the vile hate-mongering that it truly is.  But this is exactly the kind of organisation that appeals to people without the time, energy or ability to think critically or even think for themselves at all.

This is exactly the sort of thing that scares the living daylights out of me.  Because these organisations are on the rise.  Everywhere.

Only good thing about Labour?

Standard

There have been a number of phrases being bandied around teh interwebz lately, the gist of which is that the only thing that Labour has going for it now is that they are not Abbott, meaning that Abbott would be worse.

A perfect example is this retweet by Jeremy Sear:

And then…  And then the very same day that the above was tweeted, I saw this headline:

Yes, you read that right.  Mr. Conservative himself, Tony Abbott, thinks that the change that the ALP is proposing to the migration act are going too far.  I feel like my world has been turned upside down.  What they hell are the ALP thinking with this?

If you wade through the changes to the legislation (which I did not, I used Jeremy Sear’s handy reference here), you find that the Federal Government is hereby absolving itself of any responsibility for the welfare of migrants and empowering themselves to deport them to an offshore processing facility in any country of their choosing.  I mean, these things are always slightly more complex than that, but in effect if the Minister deems it appropriate any country can be used for offshore processing and no heed need be paid to the laws of natural justice.  This includes children, might I add.

Why should Labour care about the children if their parents clearly didn’t is the upshot, and the stance that Bowen is apparently taking.

There are no words for how disgraceful this is.

One theory being put out is that the ALP is bluffing, that they are using these Draconian changes to ensure that the coalition doesn’t pass the amendments to the legislation, as per Keri Sear below:

I don’t know what to think any more.  I am so appalled by what has been coming out of the Labour party lately.  It seems to me that this has gone too far to be part of some elaborate bluff.  Why risk putting so many people offside, just to..? Just to what, exactly?  At this point all that remains is to watch what comes out of parliament over the next few weeks, and hope we finally get the real story.
